Redesigning a Heart Health & Wellness App

I led a redesign of a mobile wellness application focused on heart health. The app provides real-time heart measurements, personalized recommendations, and a 13-week tracking system, combining proprietary assessments with custom educational content. My goal was to increase engagement and usability through user-centered design and strategic improvements.

Challenge

Despite its valuable features, the app struggled with engagement. Users found the purpose unclear, and the long-term tracking system lacked shorter-term rewards to sustain motivation. The challenge was to create a user experience that clearly communicates value and keeps users engaged over time.

Outcome

A fully redesigned experience that:

  • Provides a clear value proposition from the first interaction.

  • Incorporates short-term motivators to maintain user engagement.

  • Enhances usability with a clean, intuitive interface.

  • Positions the app for long-term adoption while supporting users in their heart health journey.

Design approach

I developed multiple solutions targeting different aspects of the experience:

  1. Onboarding Experience

    • Introduced a clear explanation of what users were doing and why it mattered.

    • Connected app features to personal health goals, establishing immediate perceived value.

  2. Functionality Revamp

    • Streamlined the weekly tracking system to be more engaging.

    • Added visual progress indicators and micro-rewards to sustain motivation.

  3. UI Redesign

    • Updated visual hierarchy, typography, and color usage to make content more digestible.

    • Focused on clarity and ease of interaction to improve usability.

This project reinforced the importance of clarifying the why and what in health-focused products. Even when functionality is strong, engagement suffers if the value isn’t immediately clear. By aligning design, onboarding, and functionality with user motivation, we can create experiences that are both meaningful and actionable.
